Interview
with News 5 on my vote to CUT property taxes in Lake County by doubling the homestead exemption for low income seniors AND doubling the owner occupancy credit. Seniors with a total household income of $40,000 or less are eligible for the doubled homestead exemption in 2025. The average benefit for eligible seniors will double from approximately $500 to $1,000. All homeowners are eligible for the owner occupancy credit. The credit will double from 2.5% to 5% of your property taxes on your principal residence. As your Commissioner, I am doing everything in my power to fight the outrageous and unfair explosion in your property taxes. This is NOT enough. In the last year alone, property taxes in Lake County, including public schools, cities, villages and townships, increased by approximately $52 million. My vote to double the homestead exemption and owner occupancy credit returns about $14 million or less than a third of that increase to you. This is NOT over and the fight against property taxes must continue!
