John Eklund is serving his first term as State Senator for the 18th District, which includes Geauga and Lake Counties and part of Cuyahoga County. Though new to public office, John brings to the job a unique understanding of the issues facing Ohio, having worked as an attorney for more than 30 years in one of our state’s largest law firms.

As a partner at Calfee, Halter, & Griswold LLP, John helps Ohio job creators navigate the complexity of local, state and federal business laws so they can focus on employment and growth.  He has been named an Ohio Super Lawyer in antitrust law and is included among The Best Lawyers in America, the oldest and most respected peer review guide to the legal profession worldwide.

In the Senate, John uses his legal experience to craft responsible public policies on behalf of his constituents.  He serves on the State and Local Government and Veterans Affairs Committee, as well as the Senate Judiciary and Senate Highways and Transportation committees.  His work on behalf of the 18th District has already resulted in the passage of legislation to close a loophole in Ohio’s DNA testing law, providing important new tools to law enforcement and criminal prosecutors across the state.

John also serves as a member of the Great Lakes Commission, a public agency established by the Great Lakes Basin Compact in 1955 to help its member states and provinces speak with a unified voice and collectively fulfill their vision for a healthy, vibrant Great Lakes – St. Lawrence River region.

John is a graduate of Washington and Lee School of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree from Union College.  He resides in Munson Township with his wife, Meg. They have two daughters, Jennifer and Amanda.

The Eklund family remains active in their community, where they are active members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chardon.  John serves on a number of boards and organizations, including the United Way Services of Geauga County Board of Trustees, the Munson Township Scholarship Committee, and the Geauga County Republican Party Executive Committee. He is a past member of the Geauga County YMCA Board of Trustees, the Munson Township Zoning Commission, the Chagrin River Land Conservancy Board of Trustees, the Cleveland Athletic Club Board of Trustees, and the Advisory Board of The Ohio District Court Review.
